When you’re in the market for a new vehicle, determining which amenities fit your needs is paramount. One such amenity found on many Ford vehicles is the Ford MyKey - a programmable keyfob that allows you to restrict access and customize safe driving settings for new drivers in your family.

If you have any questions about Ford MyKey or are interested in finding a vehicle that has it, the team at St. John’s Cabot Ford Lincoln can help you.

What is Ford MyKey? And Why Does it Matter?

Ford MyKey is a programmable keyfob that allows parents to customize specific driving settings for their new or inexperienced drivers. Once the key is placed in the ignition, the Ford MyKey technology will recognize the settings and apply them during your teen’s drive.

Many parents will agree that Ford MyKey matters because of the additional peace of mind it gives them. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), motor vehicle accidents rank as the second leading cause of teenage deaths. Per the CDC, teenagers aged 16-19 saw the highest risk of being injured or killed in a motor vehicle accident than any other age group.

If your family has a newly licensed driver or is about to get one, Ford MyKey can give you peace of mind that they’ll have additional support engaging in safe driving practices.

How Does It Work?

After you purchase your vehicle, you’ll have an admin key. This admin key can customize the additional keys with the configurable settings. To program these settings, you’ll enter the key into the ignition and follow the prompts on the screen.

Configurable MyKey Settings

With the Ford MyKey, you can control several settings, including:

    • Speed restrictions: You can easily limit your Ford vehicle to adhere to a maximum speed, such as 65, 70, 75, and 80 miles per hour. You can customize the key to slow down your vehicle at a certain rate, as well.

    • Low-fuel warning: This lets you set up a reminder when the gas tank only has 75 miles left. This can give you peace of mind that your teen won’t run out of gas late at night or somewhere it isn’t available.

    • Belt reminder: Seatbelts save lives, and with Ford MyKey, you can set up an alert that will remind your teen every 30 seconds to put on their seatbelt. This system also takes it a step further and mutes the car’s audio system until the front occupants put on their seatbelts.

    • Radio filter: If your vehicle is equipped with SiriusXM, you can block any stations that are labeled as having explicit content. You can also reduce the vehicle’s volume to a maximum volume of 44% so your teen is not distracted by loud noise.

    • “Always On” emergency setting: Give yourself the ultimate peace of mind by setting up the “Always On” emergency setting. This means that certain safety features such as emergency assistance are always turned on even if the driver uses MyKey to turn it off.

While not every feature will be available on every make and model, these are just a few of the types of settings you may be able to control with the Ford MyKey.

How to Disable MyKey

If you feel like you no longer need to have MyKey implemented, you can easily disable it by following these steps:

    • Put your MyKey in the ignition, access the main menu on the screen. Click “settings,” then “MyKey.”

    • Scroll until you find the “Clear MyKey” option and select “OK.”

    • Hold down the “OK” button until a message pops up saying that all your MyKey keys have been cleared.
